Standard 4 - Work and the Workplace Print E-mail
Mar 26, 2008

"An organization that involves volunteers shall clearly specify and control the work of volunteers and ensure that their work is conducive to preserving their health, safety and general well-being"

Australia's work health and safety laws are on the verge of a major overhaul. The Federal Government intends to hormonise health and safety laws to make them consistent across all states and territories. Presently the Victorian Government has deferred their enactment in Victoria. This guide has been put together by PILCH to provide NFPs with a basic understanding of OH&S laws in Victoria at present.

Worksafe have developed a handbook for community service organisations - volunteer health and safety. This handbook includes general health and safety information for people who manage volunteers in community services organisations.

Volunteers and Sexual Harassment

On 1 August 2011 new legislation came into effect that is designed to improve the way we combat discrimination and sexual harassment in Victoria.

For volunteers, the change means new protections against sexual harassment.  For organisations there are some practical implications for the way volunteering is coordinated.

Volunteering Victoria is working to support volunteers and organisations to understand and meet their responsibilities toward volunteers under the Equal Opportunity Act 2010.

Download  EOA Information Pack, which includes

  • A fact sheet and further reading
  • An adaptable policy and procedures
  • Tips for getting started
  • Options for further advice and training.

Also included is a couple of sample Sexual Harassment policy documents from Volunteering Victoria and Our Community along with a 20 minute and 40 minute powerpoint presentation. Resources are also available from Australian Human Rights Commission such as workplace posters.
