Best Practice Basics Research Project Print E-mail
Jun 16, 2011
In 2010 Give Where you Live funded a Research Project to scope potential for the development of an abridged version of the very successful Leading with Standards Program to support organisations with limited budgets and resources to develop basic policies and procedures for the management of their volunteer program.

The Leading with Standards Program, which commenced with seed funding from Give Where You Live in 2009, is proving to be a successful and relevant support model for organisations wishing to implement the National Standards for Involving Volunteers in their volunteer programs. However, findings from the extensive Leading with Standards Pilot Project Evaluation Report and subsequent Leading with Standards Programs reflect that participant’s success in achieving desired outcomes from the project were greatly affected by the resources (both time and money) available to them. The challenge exists to create a version of the Leading with Standards Program (LwS) that allows organisations with limited budget and resources to participate in the program and still manage their daily workload, without compromising the integrity and value of the program.

This Research Project has explored the potential to adapt the existing LwS model to suit the needs of organisations with limited budget and resources, and be suitably named the Best Practice Basics. Findings from the research project are published in the Leading with Standards Abridged Program Research Report, Appendix 1, Appendix 2, Appendix 3 and Appendix 4.

Recent Volunteer Seminar, ‘Strength & Diversity in Supporting Communities

As Victoria’s population continues to diversify, the role of volunteering in supporting and strengthening communities is not only important, but essential. AMES recently hosted a free Volunteer Seminar, ‘Strength & Diversity in Supporting Communities’ designed to provide organisations in the region with the knowledge to develop strong and diverse volunteer programs. The seminar was held in National Volunteer Week on May 10 at the new Diversitat Community Hub in Norlane.

The Minister for Multicultural Affairs & Citizenship, The Hon Nicholas Kotsira, MLA officially launched National Volunteer Week at the event. Guest speakers from Volunteering Geelong, Cloverdale Community Centre, Diversitat and DPCD spoke on various topics including Best Practice Volunteer Management supporting Cultural & Linguistically Diverse (CALD) volunteers, examples of including volunteers from CALD backgrounds and the new Victorian Volunteer Portal 'I Can Do That'

Launch of the G21 Project Based Volunteering project Print E-mail
Jun 18, 2010

G21 Launch

Funding for the G21 Project Base Volunteering project was announced by Lily D’Ambrosio MP, Minister for Community Development at the 2010 June 17 Launch held on at Deakin University.  Pictured above (from left) - Jordan Mavros and Lesley Lightfoot (United Way), Lily D’Ambrosio MP and Gail Rodgers (Volunteering Geelong).

Like most things, volunteering is continually evolving. Project Based Volunteering, otherwise known as Skilled Volunteering, is a result of changes in society and increasing demands on our time. Its development is being driven by tertiary students, skilled professionals and skilled retirees (Baby Boomers) who want short term, flexible, ‘bite size’ volunteering opportunities which provide a meaningful experience without the long term commitment.

Volunteering Geelong, along with several other stakeholders, has begun a project to establish infrastructure and systems to make this a reality. This style of volunteering has enormous potential to assist community organisations. It provides opportunities to access skilled and experienced volunteers who can undertake a short term project that would normally cost money and time that they do not have.

With the support of funding from the Department of Planning & Community Development, Volunteering Geelong has appointed Lucinda Tucker as the Project Officer to implement this initiative. Lucinda works at Volunteering Geelong on Tuesdays and Fridays and is keen to talk with people who have skills that they would like to use to assist organisations through a specific short term project.

In the first half of 2011, Community Organisations will be invited to lodge projects with Volunteering Geelong that can be implemented by a volunteer with the appropriate skills. A workshop will also be conducted for organisations to support project management and development.

For more information please contact Lucinda Tucker at Volunteering Geelong on 52211377.
